Starting a Fitness Journey
by Pamela
Welcome to Thrive Personal Fitness!
I am beginning the next phase of my fitness journey and I am so please to be sharing it with you! Before we go too far down the road let me bring you up to speed of where I have been so far. In 1999 I was miserable. I was overweight, struggling with controlling my type I diabetes and developing shooting pains in my back. I survived on diet soda and frozen dinners, when I wasn’t eating out with friends. Everything was out of control.
The one positive was the new relationship I was in. My boyfriend (thankfully now husband) was very much into working out and managing his nutrition. He was in great shape and, well, I had some work to do. So I bought Weight Training For Dummies, took over a friend’s gym membership and started taking a good hard look at what I ate.
You know what? It worked. I started to lose weight and I felt better. My confidence went up. My glucose readings went down. I’ll never forget the day I had to go buy new jeans on my lunch hour. I hadn’t realized how loose they had become and my boss was concerned about whether they would stay up! Off to the mall I want, grinning all the way.
Fast forward to today. I look around me and see some alarming statistics:
- 66% of the adult population is considered overweight
- 19% of children 6-11 years old are overweight
- 59% of adults never engage in vigorous physical activity
- 32% of adults suffer from hypertension
- If current trends continue 1 in 3 American will develop diabetes sometime in their lifetime
- Medical expenditures for obese workers are between 29%-117% greater than workers with a normal weight (http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/)
I could easily have been one of those statistics, one of those 66% overweight, but I made a choice 10 years ago. Has it always been easy? No, we all have bumps in the road that test the commitments we make in life. I can say it has brought me confidence and rewards beyond anything I could have imagined when I started.
So you are probably wondering, What is the secret? How did she manage to lose weight and keep it off for 10 years? That brings me back to my next phase. I want to share what I have learned with you. My goal is to provide you the tools and support you need to start your own fitness journey. Through exercise and sound nutrition, with a little tough love on occasion, I can start you down a road to a healthier and happier you. All I need from you is a commitment and a belief that something in your life has to change. Not a temporary fix, but a new way of living. With that all things are possible.
Thank you for joining me on this fantastic voyage. I look forward to a healthy and productive future for all. As Susan B. Anthony once said, “Failure is Impossible”.
