Maybe that’s why I enjoy giving things away so much. I know that moment of excitement when you find out you’ve won “a major award”.

I was absolutely thrilled when I won a Twitter giveaway from Jeanette Jenkins, the Hollywood Trainer. When asked what gets you energized, I answered a good workout and green tea. It was a good enough answer to award me a copy of her workout DVD, Power Yoga.

I don’t claim to be a yoga expert, but I like it. It’s something different and it helps me breath, relax and improve my flexibility.  I don’t have time to go to classes so I rely on DVDs and yoga programs I DVR from PBS.  I was excited to have something new in my repertoire.

I’ll admit the DVD sat on my desk for many weeks before I actually got to try it out.  So when I did have a free evening to try it, I was very anxious. This rush to give it a try taught me a valuable lesson.

Read the menu. Don’t just pop it in and push play.

An hour later, with jelly legs and a nice glistening sweat, I asked myself, how long is this thing? The end was nowhere in sight and I finally decided to say uncle. I found the menu and realized there were multiple workouts, totaling almost an hour and a half. Ooops.

In hindsight, this is a good thing. It gives me flexibility (no pun intended). Days I have more time I can do the 43 minute Power Flow sequences and days that Ihave less I can do either the 13 minute Vinyasa flows or the 14 minutes Floor Work sequence.  I love choices, variety and the ability to adapt to my ever changing schedule.

The next day I fully expected my legs to be sore. Surprise, not my legs but my shoulders and back.  It had to be the many many repetitions of chaturanga.  I like those kind of surprises.

This was a good workout. Not as relaxing as I might have liked, but a great way to work on strength and flexibility outside of the weight room.  Final score: relaxation 4, muscles worked 7.  Need more challenge in your yoga routine? Then I recommend checking out Power Yoga by Jeanette Jenkins.
