Let Go of Your Excuses to Succeed

Everyone seems to have a limit.  A line in the sand they won’t cross when it comes to fitness and nutrition.

For some it’s something little, something that doesn’t stop them on their journey yet seems like something odd to hold onto due to it being contradictory to their goals and aspirations. Maybe it’s a bowl of ice cream on Saturday night or the occasional diet soda.

For others it’s bigger than that.  They want to lose weight and get fit, yet they refuse to give up the daily habits that are truly boulders blocking the path they need to take.  This is the mentality I don’t understand.

It’s one thing to have the daily small piece of chocolate or a glass of red wine on the weekend. It’s quite another to refuse to give up the way of living, eating and moving that is the source of the problem.

I mean we’ve all heard the definition of insanity, right? Doing the same thing but expecting different results. I see insanity all the time. Sometimes it’s during the first consultation before we can even start to formulate a plan they tell me what they won’t do.  Not what they would like to achieve (other than lose weight) but all the things they aren’t willing to give up to achieve that single solitary goal. Or it’s after a session or two, after I’ve started to review their eating habits and ask if they are doing their homework.

No, couldn’t find the time to do the exercises you prescribed.

I like going out to lunch, why should I stop?

I didn’t have time to go to the grocery store, so I grabbed a burger instead. I just don’t have time to cook.

I had no choice but to eat the (insert sugary, fatty, unhealthy food), that was what was served. I had to eat it.

The last one is my favorite. You always have a choice. No one is putting food in your mouth except for you.

Good intentions will only take you so far. You have to do the work. If you want to have a different life you have to take the actions required to create a different life. Until you let go of the habits of an unhealthy and unfit person you can never be a healthy and fit person.
