    Another very pertinent videoblog! I enlisted the support of my friends when I decided to make my lifestyle change, and by and large it worked very well – most understood what I was trying to do and why. My family (who luckily live far away!) were less understanding – I guess because my lifestyle is now so different than theirs and they found the physical change difficult to accept. The fact that nine times out of ten I refused alcohol was also a surprise for them. Then again, the degree of acceptance (funnily enough) depended on the family member and how good/bad my relationship to that person was. At work, I find there is little support. I joined a new company at the beginning of the year, and there are always biscuits on the table. When I asked why there wasn’t a fruit bowl, I was told that nobody would eat the fruit and that it used to rot! So now I just put on my blinkers when I go for a coffee!
    I try to plan ahead as far as possible, and keep to the basic ground rules – again, as far as possible – when I’m out
    of my normal environment – as was the case last weekend when I was hiking in Portugal. My diet wasn’t perfect, but no real damage was done :-)

    You’re right. Families are often harder then friends. I think we have so many traditions tied to food that sometimes it can feel more like a rejection of the tradition and family than the food or dirnk. I think a lot of workplaces are like yours. When I worked in an office I would bring bananas or veggies and hummus for “food days” and no one would touch it but me. After awhile I just shrugged it off and took comfort in the fact that at least I was assured a healthy snack for the day. Just keep your blinders on and keep being a good example. Eventually you will influence people more than you think.

    You’re so right about families! Mine certainly didn’t mean it badly, but Xmas was a trial – I found myself saying no all the time, and it was very uncomfortable. As for work, I bring my lunch and all of my snacks for the day. Sometimes I’ll have (one!) cookie in the morning, which is faithfully recorded in my DB food log – and I have been known to fish the packaging out of the bin to retrieve the nutritional information (or lack thereof). Not sure I’m influencing anyone (actually, I think they think I’m a bit neurotic), but I don’t really give a toss if the truth be told – I’m in this for the long haul, and my greatest critic, but also my biggest supporter, is yours truly!

    One cookie won’t kill. It’s the whole package that will get you! :) I don’t think it’s neurotic to be aware of what you are putting in your body. Sadly, its unawareness that is really getting us in trouble. Hopefully you don’t have to fish around too often. Daily Burn has quite an extensive food list. Usually most things I eat are already in there.
